Forward Thinking: Building a vibrant Janesville through conversation and collaboration

Share This:

The Janesville Gazette recently published our latest Forward Thinking column, which explores the importance of civic engagement, thoughtful dialogue and learning from communities beyond our own as we work to shape Janesville’s future.

In the column, Forward Janesville President & CEO Shar Hermanson reflects on the power of listening—to our business community, to civic leaders and to ideas that challenge us to think differently about what makes a great place to live. Inspired by conversations with entrepreneur Quint Studer and a visit to Pensacola, Florida, the piece highlights how intentional community-building, inclusive dialogue and people-centered design can create vibrant, welcoming cities.

The column also underscores the meaningful progress already happening in Janesville, from investments in family-friendly amenities to ongoing efforts to strengthen quality of life for residents of all ages. At the same time, it acknowledges that growth and change are rarely simple—and that asking questions, sharing perspectives and engaging with one another are essential to moving forward.

These ideas helped spark the creation of CivicCon Janesville, an initiative designed to bring nationally recognized leaders to our community and foster informed conversations around critical civic issues. The upcoming CivicCon event, Making Cities: Design Matters, will feature urban design experts Victor Dover and Joseph Kohl and invite residents to think about what’s next for Janesville.
