Building Tomorrow's Workforce: Attend Youth Apprenticeship Training

Developing and sustaining a strong workforce isn’t just a talking point at Forward Janesville — it’s one of our central missions. Every business leader we speak with, from manufacturers to healthcare providers to small business owners, emphasizes the same challenge: finding and retaining skilled, motivated workers.

That’s why we’re proud to promote an upcoming opportunity that directly supports this goal: the Youth Apprenticeship (YA) Mentor Training hosted by the Southwest Wisconsin Workforce Development Board’s Rock and Green County Youth Apprenticeship Consortium.

The training has two dates and locations, with the events running from 8 a.m.-noon. Choose from:

  • Thursday, November 6 at BTC’s Monroe Campus (210 4th Ave.)
  • Thursday, November 13 at Blackhawk Technical College’s Janesville Campus (6004 S. County Rd. G)

This half-day session is designed for employers who are new to the Youth Apprenticeship program as well as those who have participated before but want a refresher. Participants will gain valuable insights into how to mentor student apprentices effectively, create a safe and engaging learning environment, and ensure that both the apprentice and the business benefit from the experience.

Registration is simple — just email Dana Leikness at [email protected] to reserve your spot.

Why This Matters for Janesville’s Business Community

Workforce development is a part of Forward Janesville’s Growth Wheel. Through initiatives like Craftsman with Character and the Janesville Business Academy, we’ve seen firsthand how early exposure to career opportunities can inspire students and strengthen local talent pipelines. Programs like Youth Apprenticeship connect education to industry, allowing high school students to gain real-world experience while earning credit and wages, and allowing employers to identify, train and retain the next generation of skilled workers.

The upcoming mentor training is a critical piece of that puzzle. A successful Youth Apprenticeship experience depends on strong, supportive mentors who understand how to guide young people in professional settings. This training helps employers build that foundation, giving mentors the tools they need to succeed — from communication and coaching techniques to understanding program expectations and outcomes.

By investing in youth apprenticeship, Janesville-area employers aren’t just filling today’s workforce gaps, they’re helping shape a sustainable future for our local economy. Every student who completes an apprenticeship gains valuable technical and soft skills, and every employer who participates builds a stronger connection to the community’s educational and workforce ecosystem.

Moving Forward, Together

At Forward Janesville, we believe workforce development is economic development. The more we collaborate with schools, employers and regional partners, the more we can build pathways that keep our young talent here working, learning and contributing to our community’s growth.

The Youth Apprenticeship Mentor Training is one more step toward that shared vision. We encourage local employers to get involved, participate and continue leading the way in building a workforce that will carry Janesville and Rock County into the future.
