Our latest Forward Thinking column in the Janesville Gazette focuses on an issue that directly shapes our community’s future: local elections and the leaders who serve in them.
On April 7, voters across Janesville will head to the polls to elect representatives for the Janesville City Council, Janesville School Board, and Rock County Board of Supervisors. These roles may be local and volunteer-based, but their impact is anything but small. Decisions made at this level influence housing, education, infrastructure, budgeting and long-term economic competitiveness.
As highlighted in the column, Forward Janesville and its Government Relations Council closely follow issues affecting business and community growth. One major example is the city’s Zoning and Subdivision Code Update, a process designed to expand housing opportunities, improve affordability and streamline development. Progress like this doesn’t happen by accident—it’s the result of thoughtful leadership and informed decision-making.
Strong candidates for local office, the column notes, share common traits: they are willing to learn, open to dialogue, data-driven, forward-looking, and able to see the big picture rather than focus on a single issue. Understanding the scope of these roles is equally important, as elected officials must provide oversight, guide financial decisions, and help set a strategic direction for the community.
