Editor's Note: Through our Keep Kids Learning initiative, Forward Janesville is highlighting the people, partnerships and experiences shaping education in our community. Today, we're sharing a personal reflection from Julia Masterson, a first-year teacher at Craig High School who has returned to the School District of Janesville as an educator — following in her father's footsteps.
A Legacy of Teaching
By Julia Masterson, Craig High School Teacher
Walking into Craig High School this fall as a first-year teacher, I didn't just enter a new job. I stepped into a legacy.
For more than 25 years, my dad has dedicated his life to teaching in these very hallways. Growing up, I watched the impact he had on generations of students. He wasn't just delivering lesson plans. He was building confidence, offering a safe harbor and changing lives.
Between his inspiring example at home and the incredible educators in the School District of Janesville who guided me through my own school years, I realized early on that there is no higher calling than helping a young person discover their purpose in life.
Stepping into my own classroom for the first time has shown me just how demanding teaching can be.
Teachers today face significant challenges. We navigate complex academic and emotional needs daily, striving to ensure that every single student feels seen and supported.
The reality of teaching is that passion alone isn't enough if we want Janesville's children to thrive.
Teaching next door to my dad reminds me every day of the enduring power of a dedicated educator. At the same time, we need to invest in our teachers and our schools because it is a direct investment in the future of Janesville and its children.
I see it so clearly as a first-year teacher.
Thank you to our community for helping ensure our schools remain places of inspiration, growth and hope for generations to come.
